What is WEEE?

WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment and is a surcharge applied to the price of electrical/electronic appliances to cover collection and recycling costs.

For this, the European Union has created a directive implicating manufacturers, distributors, installers and, of course, end users in the correct management of this type of waste and the recycling of components so that instead of being a source of pollution, they can be used to produce new appliances, minimising the use of natural resources.

In Spain, this directive was formalised by Royal Decree 208/2005, dated 25 February, requiring manufacturers to arrange selective collection of the appliances which they sell and to guarantee that such items are transported to treatment centres and recycled appropriately. As such, the Royal Decree calls for collaboration from all parties involved in the production and consumption of these items by applying a surcharge designed exclusively to finance these management and waste recycling tasks.
